Drinking water

Purifying water is strongly recommended for all sources of supply, mainly for well water, spring water, but also for that of the aqueduct.

The quality of the water that comes out of our taps is not always the same, in fact it undergoes continuous changes that can affect its quality.

Well or spring water can undergo microbiological pollution due to infiltrations or even after rains and thunderstorms, while the water from the aqueduct could be unhealthy because the management company has changed the quantity of chlorine introduced or because the The aging of the hydraulic distribution lines produces contaminants that are transported to the point of use.

The substances that must be removed during the purification treatment can be iron and manganese present in the water, hydrogen sulphide present in the slopes or in volcanic areas, sulphates present in deep waters and in areas with thermal activity, heavy metals, such as antimony, arsenic , lead, originating from industrial discharges; organic micropollutants such as hydrocarbons, pesticides and solvents; ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc.

In addition, the untreated waters also contain forms of microbiological life such as: plankton; fungi; protozoa; trivial and pathogenic bacteria; virus, Giardia, Salmonella, Escherichia Coli.

  

The use of UVC systems is a valid solution for the disinfection of water and for the treatment of all these elements, guaranteeing the maintenance of the organoleptic characteristics of the water.

UV is a system that eliminates 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including those that resist chlorine without altering the taste and smell of the water and allows you to be sure of the water you drink. UV rays are also active against viruses. Furthermore, there is currently no microorganism resistant to their destructive action, precisely because of the depth of its action.

UV is recognized as a superior method, especially when compared to other disinfection methods, because:

  • It is very safe. There are no chemical agents to handle or keep under control and the result is obtained immediately.
  • It has a very low implementation and operating cost.
  • He is "friend of the environment". There are no by-products created by the disinfection process and therefore no waste or residues to be disposed of.
  • It does not change the state, the taste, the smell of the treated water and it is impossible to have an "overdose" (as instead it can happen with chlorine).
  • It does not remove any of the minerals in the water and therefore maintains its natural and beneficial characteristics as well as its good taste.
  • The plants are very easy to install and maintain efficient.
  • It is compatible with all the other water treatment methods such as filtration, softening, dechlorination with activated carbon, in fact in the latter case the law establishes the obligation of UV systems since the water is without antimicrobial protection.

Furthermore, CHEMICAL DISINFECTION (chlorine) does not work against Cryptosporidium and Giarda, and has a limited effect on Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, without considering that it changes the taste and smell of the water in an unpleasant way and leaves by-products residues dangerous for health. .

To correctly size the system you need to know:

  • The instantaneous flow rate, i.e. the liters per minute that flow in the pipe on which the sterilizer must be inserted at the moment of maximum use
  • UVT transparency, i.e. how much resistance the water offers to the passage of germicidal ultraviolet rays (253.7nm).

In most cases, to know this last parameter, it is sufficient to know the source of supply and whether mechanical filtration systems are present.

Tips for purchasing, installing and maintaining UV-C systems

Maintenance program

The periodic maintenance program for UV-C systems consists of:

  • Change of lamps, about once a year.
  • Quartz replacement every 2 ÷ 3 lamp changes; not mandatory, but recommended.
  • Periodic check of the cleanliness of the system, quartz and UV lamp. To be done especially with particularly turbid waters, rich in salts or with a high degree of hardness.

System installation

The figure shows a typical installation method for the UV-WATER system; it is recommended to provide a pre-treatment filter before the UV system, followed by the bypass to have the possibility of diverting the water in case of emergency.

UV-WATER allows the replacement of the UV lamp without removing the quartz, therefore without having to turn off the water and empty the sterilizer.

Legend:

AInlet sampling valve: allows sampling of the water entering the irradiation chamber.

BShut-off valves: they are closed if the appliance needs to be serviced.

CBypass shut-off valve: Open to supply emergency water if the UV-WATER system is not available or not used (important !! Remember to close them when using the UV device).

DOUTLET sampling valve: allows the sampling of the water coming out of the UV radiation chamber, analysis necessary to confirm that the treated water is of adequate quality.

EIrradiation chamber: made of mirror-polished AISI 304 stainless steel (AISI 316 on request) both outside and inside, a feature that ensures better reflection of UVC radiation, increasing the effectiveness of the system. The stainless steel chamber is crossed longitudinally by a pure quartz sheath which contains the UVC tube; quartz has the function of isolating the UVC lamp and is transparent to ultraviolet rays, which radiate water by disinfecting it.

FPretreatment filter: In order for the UV-WATER system to work effectively, the water that reaches the radiation chamber must meet certain quality parameters.

The pretreatment equipment must be installed BEFORE the UV chamber.

Pretreatment systems can be composed of one or more of the following elements: sediment filters; carbon filters; iron removal systems; water softeners; cyst reduction filters, etc.

Minimum characteristics of water quality

Iron: <0.3 ppm (0.3 mg / l)
Hardness: <120 ppm
